Top Orthodontist and Pediatric Dentist in Colorado Springs, Colorado
Ensuring your child’s newly erupted teeth (which typically appear between 6 to 12 months of age) receive proper dental care from the start is crucial. At Life Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry, we understand that your child’s first visits to our office are pivotal, and our goal is to make these experiences positive and welcoming.
To help make your visit as smooth as possible, please complete and submit your child’s medical history form and insurance information beforehand. Bringing these documents with you will save time upon arrival. Don’t forget to bring your health insurance cards as well.
If your child is on any medications, you might want to bring the prescription to show the doctor. If you’re transferring from another dental practice, with your approval, we’ll request all prior dental records to be sent to us.
We encourage you to make visiting the dentist a positive experience. At home, try to avoid using phrases like “it won’t hurt” or “you won’t get a shot” as this can inadvertently create anxiety.
For younger children (4 years or under), scheduling their visit in the morning is highly recommended. Children tend to be more rested and cooperative earlier in the day, compared to later when they might be tired from daycare or school. This can significantly improve their ability to cooperate during the visit. We’re happy to provide excuse forms for work and school to accommodate this schedule.
When you arrive at our office, you’ll be greeted by our friendly staff and given a tour of the facility. This allows your child to become familiar with their surroundings and feel more comfortable. We use behavior management strategies like “Tell-Show-Do” and “Positive Reinforcement” to build trust with your child. Your child will be shown the instruments we use and how they work. Our office features both an open-bay concept, which allows children to observe and model behavior, as well as three fully private suites for added privacy.
During the visit, you will meet Dr. Libby Paulsen, who will perform a comprehensive exam tailored to your child’s needs. This may include a head and neck exam, an oral cancer screening, cleaning, fluoride treatment, and dental radiographs if necessary. The length of the appointment will depend on your child’s age and comfort level. For younger or more anxious children, sitting on a parent’s lap during the exam and cleaning is an option. Our primary goal is to establish the dentist’s office as a safe, friendly place for your child. If needed, we may also take images using our low-dose digital imaging system.
Dr. Libby Paulsen will review the findings with you, discuss important topics such as cavity prevention, diet, hygiene, thumb-sucking, pacifier use, and fluoride exposure. We value your involvement in your child’s healthcare, and together with Dr. Paulsen, you’ll create a specific treatment or preventative plan that best suits your family’s needs.
