The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child have their first orthodontic screening by age 7 — well before most permanent teeth have come in, and often before parents think there’s anything to check. There’s a specific reason for that timing: several jaw and bite problems are much easier, faster, and less invasive to correct while the bones are still growing than after growth has finished.
What we’re actually looking for at age 7:
Importantly, an early screening doesn’t mean early treatment for every child. Most kids we screen at 7 don’t need any intervention yet — we simply monitor growth at regular intervals until the timing is right, if it’s needed at all. But for the subset of children with a crossbite, significant jaw discrepancy, or airway-related narrow palate, this window is the difference between a straightforward appliance-based fix in childhood and a much more involved (sometimes surgical) correction after growth is complete.
At Life Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Zitterkopf provides no-cost early orthodontic screenings so that timing is never the reason a treatable problem gets missed. If your child is 7 or older and hasn’t had an orthodontic evaluation yet, there’s no downside to getting one — either we confirm everything is on track, or we catch something early enough to make it simple.
