Sedation Dentistry for Kids: Options, Safety, and What to Expect

Pediatric Sedation Dentistry: Options & Safety | Colorado Springs

Not every child can sit calmly through dental treatment, and that’s not a parenting failure — it’s a normal part of pediatric development, especially for very young children, anxious kids, or children with sensory sensitivities or special needs. Sedation dentistry exists to make necessary dental care possible and safe when a standard visit isn’t realistic.

The sedation options we offer, from lightest to deepest:

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas): a mild, fast-acting sedative breathed through a nasal mask. The child stays fully awake and responsive, effects wear off within minutes, and it’s appropriate for mild anxiety or shorter procedures.
  • Oral conscious sedation: a liquid or pill sedative given before the appointment to help an anxious child relax into a drowsy, cooperative state while still able to respond. Vital signs are monitored throughout.
  • IV sedation or general anesthesia: reserved for extensive treatment needs, very young children, or patients with special needs where cooperation isn’t possible even with lighter sedation. This level requires more intensive monitoring and is typically performed with a pediatric anesthesiologist involved.

Safety comes first. Dr. Paulsen determines the appropriate sedation level based on the child’s age, health history, anxiety level, and the extent of treatment needed — never defaulting to the deepest option when a lighter one will work. Every sedation appointment includes continuous monitoring of heart rate, oxygen levels, and breathing, and our team is trained specifically in pediatric emergency protocols.

What to expect: a pre-sedation consultation to review medical history and give fasting instructions, clear before-and-after care instructions for parents, and a recovery period in-office before your child goes home. Most children remember little to nothing about the procedure itself, which is often the biggest relief for families who’ve had difficult dental visits in the past.

If your child has significant dental anxiety, extensive treatment needs, or a condition that makes a standard visit unrealistic, sedation dentistry may be the right path. Talk with Dr. Paulsen at our Colorado Springs office about which option fits your child.
