White Spots on Teeth? What Causes Demineralization and How ICON Treatment Fixes It Without Drilling

Those chalky white spots that sometimes appear on teeth — often near the gumline or right after braces come off — aren’t cavities yet, but they are a real problem: early enamel demineralization. Left alone, they can progress into actual cavities or stay as a permanent cosmetic mark, even after brushing habits improve. The good news is that in many cases, they can be treated without a single drill or needle.

What causes white spot demineralization:

• Plaque buildup around brackets during orthodontic treatment, especially near the gumline where brushing is hardest
• High acid or sugar exposure, including frequent soda, juice, or sports drink consumption
• Fluorosis, from excess fluoride exposure during tooth development (a different mechanism, same white-spot appearance)
