Braces After 40: What's Different About Adult Orthodontic Treatment

Braces After 40: What to Expect | Life Orthodontics Colorado Springs

Adults in their 40s, 50s, and beyond make up a growing share of orthodontic patients, and treatment works — but it’s worth understanding what genuinely differs from treating a teenager, so you know what to expect going in.

Bone remodeling is slower. Teenagers have highly active bone turnover, which is part of why adolescent orthodontic treatment tends to move quickly. Adult bone remodels too, just more gradually, which can mean a somewhat longer treatment timeline for comparable tooth movement. It doesn’t mean treatment won’t work — it means patience matters more.

Periodontal (gum and bone) health needs a closer look first. Years of wear, prior dental work, or mild gum recession are common by your 40s and beyond, and healthy gum and bone support is a prerequisite for safe tooth movement. We coordinate with your general dentist or a periodontist when needed to make sure the foundation is solid before moving teeth.

Existing dental work factors into the plan. Crowns, bridges, implants, and missing teeth all need to be accounted for differently than in a teenager’s treatment plan, since these don’t respond to orthodontic force the same way natural teeth do.

Bite and jaw issues are often more established. A narrow jaw or bite discrepancy that could have been addressed with simple growth guidance in childhood may now require MARPE, MSE, or a combined surgical-orthodontic approach in a fully grown adult, depending on severity.

The upside: adult patients tend to be highly consistent with aligner wear and hygiene, which often offsets the slower biological pace. And because so many adult cases involve limited relapse correction rather than full comprehensive treatment, timelines are frequently shorter than people expect.

Age alone has never disqualified anyone from orthodontic treatment at Life Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry. What matters is a proper evaluation of your bone, gum, and bite health, done honestly. If you’re considering braces or aligners later in life, schedule a consultation with Dr. Zitterkopf at our Colorado Springs office — we’ll tell you exactly what to expect for your specific case.
