“I thought expanders were only for kids.” We hear this constantly, and it’s understandable — for decades, palatal expansion really was limited to childhood, because it relies on a growth suture that fuses with age. MSE (Maxillary Skeletal Expansion) is one of the appliance systems, alongside MARPE, that changed that.
MSE uses miniscrews anchored into the palatal bone to grip the maxilla (upper jaw) directly, bypassing the limitations of tooth-anchored expanders. This allows the appliance to apply expansion forces to the bone itself rather than relying on the teeth to transmit force to a suture that’s already fused. The result: measurable, true skeletal widening in a jaw that’s stopped growing on its own.
What MSE treatment typically involves:
Why adults pursue it: Chronic nasal congestion or mouth breathing linked to a narrow airway, crowding that would otherwise require extractions, TMJ discomfort related to a constricted bite, or as part of a broader plan addressing mild-to-moderate sleep apnea alongside a sleep physician.
MSE isn’t the right fit for every adult case — bone density, suture pattern, and overall airway anatomy all factor into candidacy, which is why imaging comes before any commitment to treatment. It’s also worth setting expectations: this is a multi-month process with a real recovery and adjustment period, not an overnight fix.
If you’ve been living with a narrow bite, chronic congestion, or crowding you were told couldn’t be fixed without extractions, come talk to Dr. Zitterkopf about MSE at our Colorado Springs office. We’ll review your imaging honestly and tell you where you stand.
