There’s no expiration date on orthodontic treatment. Teeth can move at any age, as long as the surrounding bone and gum tissue are healthy — which means the “I’m too old for braces” concern we hear so often simply isn’t true. What’s changed is that adults now have options that fit into professional and social life far more easily than metal braces did a generation ago.
Why adults choose Invisalign specifically:
What’s different about adult treatment compared to treating teenagers: Adult bone remodels more slowly than a teenager’s, so tooth movement can take somewhat longer for comparable cases. Adults are also more likely to have prior dental work — crowns, bridges, missing teeth, or gum recession — that needs to be factored into the treatment plan. And because adult jaws have finished growing, some cases that would be addressed with growth guidance in children (like a narrow palate) may need MARPE or MSE alongside aligners rather than the appliance alone.
None of this makes adult treatment more difficult, just more individualized — which is exactly why a proper consultation and 3D scan matter more than guessing based on what you remember from adolescent orthodontics or a friend’s experience.
At Life Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Zitterkopf treats adult patients across the full range of complexity, from minor cosmetic alignment to cases involving expansion, bite correction, or relapse from previous treatment. If you’ve been putting off straightening your teeth because you assumed it was too late, it isn’t. Schedule a consultation at our Colorado Springs office and see what your options actually look like.
